When Sir Cliff originally bought the Quinta, he wanted to create a working farm and not a celebrity property. Sir Cliff immediately saw the potential of what was little more than a rambling old Farmhouse, and proceeded to plant acres of fig trees and a few vegetables. At this time David Baverstock a winemaker from Australia, suggested he planted vines. The start of the dream and Vida Nova (New Life). The vineyard was planted in 1997/1998 following detailed studies carried out by the eminent Australian viticulturalist Dr. Richard Smart. Quinta do Moinho was established using modern viticultural principles. The vines quickly settled themselves providing a thriving and healthy licensed vineyard of 7.5 hectares producing Syrah, Aragones, Antao Vaz and Arinto grapes. It is well known that Sir Cliff is also an equal business partner with Nigel and Lesley Birch at the Winery, Adega Cantor; and an important supplier of quality grapes for their production of wines. The first of these were produced in 2000 for private consumption, with Vida Nova launched commercially in 2001. Adega do Cantor is internationally acclaimed for its wines, having consistently won many global and local awards over the years, the first being Vida Nova Tinto 2004 at the International Wine Challenge in London. Since the original wines, there have been awards for Vida Nova Rose, Vida Nova Branco, Onda Nova Verdelho, Vida Nova Reserva, Onda Nova Viognier, Onda Nova Alicante Bouschet and Congratulations. The partners have added to their cellar with the recent addition of the 3Q wines which are semi sparkling, similar to Prosecco.
